The Center for Language Studies (CLS) at Brown University seeks a dynamic language professional for a full-time position as Visiting Lecturer in American Sign Language (ASL) beginning August 1st, 2024. This is a one-year position with the possibility of a second-year renewal. All courses will be taught in-person on-campus. Selected candidate will teach a range of potential courses according to program need: ASL I-IV, Deaf Culture. The teaching load is 6 courses per academic year (3 courses per semester).
The successful candidate will promote inclusion, equity, and diversity in the curriculum and have teaching and research agendas committed to such values. As such, we welcome candidates whose teaching, albeit firmly grounded in language, also explores intersections with literary and cultural studies as well as fields such as Diaspora Studies, Race, Postcolonial and/or Decolonial Studies, and Media Studies, among others. We are especially interested in applicants who would complement the center's cross-language, cross-disciplinary strengths in language studies, translation, gender and sexuality studies, poetry studies, film studies. Further, the Center for Language Studies is keenly interested in diversifying and encourages applications from diverse candidates. The successful applicant will demonstrate exceptional promise as a rigorous and dynamic teacher and scholar for whom excellence in teaching is interwoven with a proven dedication to inclusive research, teaching and mentorship of undergraduate students. They will also contribute to the intellectual life of the center and wider university, supporting our efforts to build a diverse and inclusive teaching and scholarly community.
1. Master?s degree or equivalent in ASL language teaching, linguistics, or related fields.
2. Experience in teaching ASL at the college or university level.
3. Ability to teach ASL at all levels and versed in teaching technologies.
4. Native or near-native proficiency in ASL and excellent command of written English.
