Job Description
The Nuclear Safety Specialist is responsible for providing support to the DOE by performing safety design reviews during progressive phases of project definition and execution. This position provides services which may include, but are not limited to, the review of nuclear facility safety documentation pertaining to operations facilities that include the following activities: radioactive and hazardous materials storage; decontamination and decommissioning; and waste packaging and shipping.
S&K Federal Services, LLC is seeking a Nuclear Safety Specialist for a Technical Support Services contract with the Department of Energy (DOE) Environmental Management Consolidated Business Center in Cincinnati, OH, supporting multiple DOE/EM small sites.
Technical Support Services - Review of safety basis documents that require DOE approval for Hazard Category 3 Nuclear Facilities.
- Review of documentation related to configuration control and authorization basis maintenance (e.g., un-reviewed safety questions, conduct of operations procedures, etc.).
- Ensure that the analyses and documentation meets or exceeds DOE requirements, with particular emphasis on the quality of the Hazard Assessment and Analyses, the Hazards Controls, and the resulting System Safety and Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs).
- The subject matter expertise reviews may also focus on the safety basis documents for facilities that are less than Hazard Category 3. These documents include Hazard Assessment Documents and Inactive Waste Site Assessments.
Administration - Prepare reports based on reviews performed to support DOE policies and goals.
- Prepare and present reports and briefings as necessary.
- Participate in periodic required training.
Education - BS degree in Engineering, Physics, Health Physics or specialization in physics, radio biology, radiological physics, radiation biophysics, or other health physics related subjects.
Experience - Minimum of one (1) year of experience in Industrial, Federal, State, or other directly related background that has provided specialized experience in Nuclear Safety.
- Knowledge and experience with 10 CFR 830.204, Documented Safety Analysis, DOE Guide 421.1-2 and safety basic requirements for environmental restoration and decommissioning activities.
- Knowledge of DOE O 231.1B (radiological portion) 458.1 and 10 CFR 835. DOE environmental remediation project experience, preferred.
- DOE-STD-1183-2019, Nuclear Safety Specialist Standards Required.
License, Cert or Registration - Must have current/valid drivers' license.
- Must have proof of U.S. citizenship.
- An active clearance for this position is desired. At a minimum the individual must be able to obtain a Q clearance.
Special knowledge, skills, & abilities - Knowledge of DOE regulations, directives, and standards (10 CFR 830, Subpart B, and DOE STD 1104)
- Must possess problem solving skills and the capability to prioritize daily work schedule in keeping with productivity standards.
- Must possess an excellent understanding of technical issues and be able to communicate them effectively verbally and in writing.
- Must be able to draft professional quality correspondence, reports, briefings, and other communications.
- Must be able to communicate effectively before groups of senior-level customers in the DOE and within the company.
- Must be able to multitask, prioritize daily work schedule so that production goals are met, and adapt to changing requirements.
