Responsible for supporting genetic counselors' clinical activities (e.g., in the Maternal Fetal Medicine or Cancer Institute) and clinical research studies at Geisinger (e.g., the Clinical Genome Resource or MyCode). This position is intended to provide valuable experience for individuals who plan to apply to graduate genetic counseling programs or pursue a career in a related field of health.

Assists genetic counselors to coordinate clinical activities, including coordination of genetic screening and testing, follow-up of genetic results, and a variety of other administrative tasks to support the clinic.

Works with genetic counselors, researchers, and staff on current research projects. Tasks include: participant recruitment, data entry and data collection guided by written protocols, development of educational materials, performance of literature searches, and potential opportunities for qualitative interviews.

Works under the supervision of the research and clinical personnel as required.

Job Duties:

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
*1. Manages the dissemination of genetic screening/testing results.
*2. Collects relevant clinical information, prepares documentation for genetic counseling use, and assists in patient scheduling to ensure appropriate referrals for genetic counseling.
*3. Assists the principal investigators in day-to-day project activities such as maintaining study documentation, attending study meetings, etc.
*4. Conducts data entry and updates computer files used for project monitoring and data collection.
*5. Assists with data collection activities including participant recruitment contact and follow-up.
6. Conducts literature searches and fact-finding research to support project development.
7. Performs other duties as required.

SPECIFIC POSITION DUTIES:
  • Lead informed consent process for studies in genomic medicine and precision health.
  • Support a genetic counseling clinic by managing referrals and test results.
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop patient friendly education materials at the appropriate reading level.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
  • Demonstrated moderate to advanced computer skills required and will be assessed at time of hire.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic research methodology and research data collection preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, including communicating clearly and sensitively with patients, families, referring
  • clinicians, and research colleagues.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Candidate has been awarded a bachelor's degree from an accredited university with a GPA of 3.3 or better; and Candidate has a strong interest in pursuing graduate level academic training in Genetic Counseling or health related field.
  • Preferred Undergraduate coursework should include at least 4 courses in Biology, including General Genetics; and 2 courses in Psychology; and 1 course in general Statistics.

  • Work is typically performed in an office, clinical environment, or remote capacity. Some travel within the System may be required.
